The String of Nickels (Dischidia nummularia) is a trailing epiphytic plant admired for its round, leaves that resemble tiny coins strung along slender vines. Its compact size and elegant drape look delightful in suspended planters or cascading from shelves. They can even be trained to grow as mounted displays! In its natural habitat, these plants are often found clinging onto trees and absorb nutrients from the air and rain. Like most epiphytic species, they develop an intricate root systems that serve as anchors, allowing them to cling effortlessly onto surfaces. You may also observe petite flowers, typically white or cream.
CARE:
- Thrives with consistent bright, indirect light. A bit of morning or evening sun is beneficial, but avoid prolonged exposure to intense, direct midday sun which can fade or scorch the leaves, and potentially dry out emerging flowers.
- Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Water thoroughly but ensure good drainage—Dischidias prefer to stay on the drier side rather than sitting in moisture.
- Does well with moderate to high humidity, but this plant can be adaptable to hold humidity.
- Due to its epiphytic nature, Dischidia don’t mind being a bit rootbound so it can typically go for several years before needing its pot to be upsized.
