This succulent can sometimes be referred to as the "mini jade" plant, but unlike the traditional jade succulent (Crassula), Portulacaria is non-toxic for most house pets. Interestingly, in its native habitat of South Africa, it serves as a vital food source for elephants and other wildlife.

This Portulacaria afra has been trained to grow in the form of a miniature tree, developing a woody trunk with thick, sturdy branches. The plant can be pruned to maintain a compact, tree-like structure, with a canopy of dense, succulent foliage.

CARE:

  • Thrives in bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some direct sunlight, especially in the morning or late afternoon, which can enhance the red/pink tones in its variegated foliage. However, avoid prolonged exposure to harsh midday sun, which can scorch the leaves.
  • Allow the soil is nearly dry out between waterings
  • Highly adaptable to typical indoor humidity levels. It does not require high humidity and can still thrive in drier environments
  • Portulacaria can be prone to acclimatization shock if there’s a sudden change in its environment. It's best to keep it in a warm, consistent environment and avoid abrupt temperature shifts to cold drafts or intense heat, which can stress the plant.
